Dorian Yates HIT
Dorian Yates' Blood & Guts High Intensity Training. The philosophy: one all-out working set per exercise, taken to absolute failure, beats multiple sets held back from failure. Each session takes 45–60 minutes. Warm-up sets prepare the joint — the working set is the session. Train Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat and recover fully. Progress by adding weight whenever you hit the top of the rep range.

What is Dorian Yates HIT?
Between 1992 and 1997 Dorian Yates won six Mr. Olympia titles training half as often and half as long as his rivals, and this is the routine he did it with — the Blood and Guts high intensity training that made 'one set to failure' a serious position rather than a gimmick. The logic is blunt: the last, hardest reps of a set do the growing, so do one or two progressively heavier warm-up sets to groove the movement, then pour everything into a single working set taken past the point where another full rep is possible.
The dorian yates workout splits the week across four days: back, rear delts and biceps on Monday; chest, triceps and abs on Wednesday; shoulders and traps on Friday; legs on Saturday. Leg day opens with leg extensions before the pressing — Yates' pre-exhaust trick so the quads, not the lower back, fail first on the leg press and hack squat that follow.
Is Dorian Yates HIT right for you?
This is an advanced hypertrophy program, and 'advanced' here means something specific: you must be able to genuinely reach muscular failure, which most lifters have never actually done, and then stop. Anyone who measures a session by how much they did will find HIT psychologically difficult — the discipline is in the three rest days as much as the working sets. If your recovery is compromised or your form breaks down under fatigue, multi-set moderate-effort training is the safer and probably better choice.
How progression works
Every exercise runs double progression off its one working set. Most lifts carry a 6–10 rep target: when your all-out set reaches the top of the range, add 2.5 kg next session and fight back up from the bottom. Warm-ups are calculated from the working weight — around 40% and 70% — with roughly 90 seconds between them, then three to four minutes of full recovery after the working set before the next movement. Because the entire program hinges on whether one set beat the last one, Durata flags each working set at RPE 10 and tracks its e1RM, so a single rep of progress never slips past the log.
Durata runs this progression for you — every session's weights are computed automatically from your training maxes and logged AMRAP sets.

Dorian Yates HIT — common questions
What counts as failure on the working set?
The point where, despite full effort and unbroken form, the next concentric rep will not complete. Yates then had a partner assist 2–3 forced reps beyond it. Not slowing down, not discomfort — an actual failed attempt. If you finish a set and could have done one more, it wasn't the working set, it was another warm-up.
Do I need a training partner?
Helpful, not mandatory. The forced reps Yates used require one, but plain concentric failure delivers most of the stimulus. Without a spotter, favor machines, dumbbells and cable work — which this split is already built around — so a failed rep ends on the stops, not on you.
Why do leg extensions come before the leg press?
Pre-exhaust. Fresh, your leg press ends when your lower back or hips complain, not when your quads are done. One all-out extension set first means the quads hit failure inside the compound lift's rep range — the target muscle becomes the weak link, which is the whole point of HIT.
How is this different from Mike Mentzer’s Heavy Duty?
Same family, different dose. Mentzer pushed frequency down to one session every 4–7 days with very few exercises; Yates kept four weekly sessions, 4–7 exercises each, one working set apiece. Blood and Guts is the higher-volume, more bodybuilding-shaped branch of high intensity training.
How long is a session, really?
45–60 minutes including warm-ups and the long post-set rests. The working portion of a session is only 5–7 all-out sets — the brevity is the method, not a shortcut.
