Vince Gironda 8×8

Also known as: 8x8 · gironda · vince gironda · eight by eight · honest workout · iron guru · classic physique · density

Vince Gironda's 8×8 — the 'Iron Guru's' Golden-Era density method for a dense, classic physique. Eight sets of eight on every exercise with only 15-30 seconds' rest, keeping the muscle under near-constant tension and the pump relentless. Pick a weight you can control for 8×8 (~60-70% of a normal working weight); add load only once all eight sets of eight are clean. Keep the rest short and the tempo strict.

What is Vince Gironda 8×8?

Vince Gironda called 8×8 the honest workout, and the name is a warning. The Iron Guru trained Hollywood physiques out of his North Hollywood gym decades before anyone said 'aesthetics', and this was the method he rated above everything else for pure muscle size: eight sets of eight reps on every exercise, resting only around 30 seconds between sets. The weight is almost incidental — the stimulus is density, cramming 64 reps per movement into a window so tight the muscle never fully recovers between sets.

The routine here runs three days a week, four exercises a day: chest and back on day one, shoulders and arms on day two, legs on day three. No barbell squats or deadlifts — Gironda built his 8×8 around machines, dumbbells and cables (hack squats, pulldowns, laterals, preacher curls) because a movement you can push close to the limit for 64 reps without your lower back giving out first is the right tool for this job.

Is Vince Gironda 8×8 right for you?

The vince gironda 8x8 program suits experienced lifters chasing a dense, classic-physique look — especially as a deliberate change of stimulus after months of heavy low-rep work, or during a cut when joints appreciate lighter loads. It is not a strength program and it will humble you: expect to use roughly 60–70% of your normal working weight and still fail sets. Beginners are better served by a simple progression routine first; 8×8 rewards lifters who already know how to keep strict tempo when everything is burning.

How progression works

Load progression is earned, not scheduled. Start light enough that the first few sets feel easy — the pump and the shrinking rest make the last three sets the real test. Hold the same weight until all eight sets of eight are completed with clean form, then add 2.5 kg next session and prove it again; two failed sessions at a weight drops it 10% to rebuild. The 30-second rest is the whole method, so guard it jealously — Durata's rest timer counts it down automatically after each set, because eight honest seconds of extra rest per set quietly turns 8×8 into a different, easier program.

Linear: +2.5 kg on success, deload 10% after 2 misses

Durata runs this progression for you — every session's weights are computed automatically from your training maxes and logged AMRAP sets.

Vince Gironda 8×8 — common questions

What weight should I use for 8×8?

Around 60–70% of what you'd normally handle for a set of 8 with full rest. If you'd curl 30 kg for 3×8, start 8×8 somewhere near 20 kg. It will feel insultingly light for three sets and impossible by set seven — that's the correct weight.

Why are the rests only 30 seconds?

Cumulative fatigue is the mechanism. With 30 seconds of rest each set starts before the muscle recovers, so by the back half of the eight sets a light weight produces near-maximal fiber recruitment and a relentless pump. Stretch the rests to two minutes and you're just doing a lot of easy sets.

Can I run the eight by eight routine as a beginner?

You can survive it, but it's a poor first program — you'd grow faster adding weight weekly on a basic routine. 8×8 earns its keep for lifters whose easy linear gains are gone and who need a density stimulus their body hasn't seen.

How long does a session take?

Fast — roughly 40 minutes. Four exercises at eight sets each sounds enormous, but with 30-second rests each movement is done in about eight minutes. The limiting factor is your willingness to keep pace, not the clock.

Will I lose strength doing 8×8?

Your heavy top-end numbers may dip slightly over a 6–8 week block since nothing here is trained near maximal loads. Most lifters get it back within a couple of weeks of returning to heavy work — usually with more muscle to push with than they left with.
