The r/Fitness Basic Beginner Routine — the sub's default first program. Three sessions a week alternating two full-body workouts of just the big barbell lifts at 3×5 (one heavy set of five for the deadlift), plus chin-ups. What is Basic Beginner Routine?
The Basic Beginner Routine — usually just "the BBR" — is the r/Fitness wiki's stock answer to "I'm new, what should I do?". Two alternating full-body workouts, three days a week. Workout A: squat, bench press and bent-over row at 3×5 each. Workout B: squat, overhead press and one set of five deadlifts. Both days close with three AMRAP sets of chin-ups. Week one goes A-B-A, week two goes B-A-B, and the cycle repeats.
It is deliberately the least program that works: ten to twelve working sets a session, four movements to remember, no percentages anywhere. Reddit built it as an on-ramp a nervous first-timer will actually finish, not as a destination.
Is Basic Beginner Routine right for you?
This is for the person who has never trained with a barbell and wants the shortest path to basic competence. Sessions finish comfortably under 45 minutes, the exercise list fits on a sticky note, and every workout carries one instruction: do your fives, then add weight. It also works as a sane reset after years away from the gym. It is the wrong choice if you already squat and press comfortably — the volume is too low to challenge a trained lifter for long — or if physique is the goal, where Fierce 5 or a push/pull/legs routine brings far more muscle-building work per week.
How progression works
Squats and deadlifts go up 5 kg every session you complete all your reps; bench, press and rows go up 2.5 kg. Chin-ups progress in reps rather than weight — every set is an AMRAP, so the job is simply beating last time's numbers. Miss your fives on a lift three sessions in a row and it deloads 10% to rebuild momentum. Added from Durata's catalog, the routine's auto progression handles all of those jumps and deloads on its own, and working-weight seeding turns a couple of logged sets into sensible day-one loads.
Durata runs this progression for you — every session's weights are computed automatically from your training maxes and logged AMRAP sets.

Basic Beginner Routine — common questions
I can't do a single chin-up yet — what do I do?
Use band-assisted chin-ups, negatives, or a lat pulldown until you can. Log whatever reps you get on the AMRAP sets; going from zero to your first strict chin-up is itself the progression, and it usually happens within a couple of months on this routine.
What weights do I use on day one?
Empty bar (20 kg) for squat, bench and press if you are brand new. Rows and deadlifts need standard plates to bring the bar to the correct height, so start those near 40 kg. Err light — the +5 kg squat jumps close any gap within weeks.
How long should I stay on the BBR?
Roughly three months, or until the same lifts start needing repeat deloads. At that point graduate to something with more volume and slower progression — GZCLP, Metallicadpa's PPL, or 5/3/1 For Beginners are the usual next steps.
Is 3×5 really enough volume to grow?
For an untrained lifter, yes. Early progress is driven by adding weight to the bar three times a week, and 3×5 delivers that stimulus while leaving enough recovery that you rarely miss. More volume becomes necessary later — which is exactly when you should be leaving this routine anyway.
