What Standing Calf Raise (Barbell) trains
How to do the Standing Calf Raise (Barbell)
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart with a barbell positioned across your upper back, gripping it with both hands slightly wider than shoulder-width. Optionally place the balls of your feet on a raised platform or plate with your heels hanging off.
- Keeping your legs straight with a soft bend in the knees, raise your heels off the floor as high as possible by pressing through the balls of your feet.
- Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your calves.
- Slowly lower your heels back down to the starting position or below the platform for a full stretch. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Getting it right
- Perform the movement slowly and with control to keep tension on your calves.
- Keep your core engaged and your back straight to stabilize the barbell.
- Use a full range of motion, rising as high as possible and lowering for a complete stretch.
- Exhale as you rise onto your toes and inhale as you lower your heels.
