What Single Leg Standing Calf Raise (Barbell) trains
How to do the Single Leg Standing Calf Raise (Barbell)
- Stand with the ball of one foot on the edge of a raised platform or step, holding a barbell across your upper back. Hook your free foot behind the ankle of your working leg and let your working heel drop below the platform edge.
- Press through the ball of your foot to raise your heel as high as possible.
- Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your calf.
- Slowly lower your heel back below the platform edge with control, feeling a stretch in your calf. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.
Getting it right
- Use a full range of motion, lowering your heel for a deep stretch and rising fully onto the ball of your foot.
- Perform the movement slowly and avoid bouncing at the bottom.
- Keep your knee straight but not locked to keep the focus on your calf.
- Set up near a rack or wall for balance, and use a weight you can control on one leg.
