What Bench Press - Close Grip (Camber Bar) trains
How to do the Bench Press - Close Grip (Camber Bar)
- Lie on a flat bench with your eyes under the bar and grip the camber bar with your hands about shoulder-width apart, closer than your normal bench grip.
- Unrack the bar and hold it over your chest with your arms straight, shoulder blades pulled back and down.
- Lower the bar under control, keeping your elbows tucked close to your body. The bend in the bar lets it travel a little below chest height.
- Press the bar back up until your arms are straight. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Getting it right
- Stop the bar at a depth your shoulders are comfortable with; the camber allows a longer range than a straight bar, it does not require it.
- Keep your elbows tucked so the triceps do most of the work.
- Keep your feet planted and your upper back tight on the bench throughout.
- Use a spotter or safety arms, as the extra range makes a stalled rep harder to rack.
