What Snatch Grip Deadlift (Barbell) trains
How to do the Snatch Grip Deadlift (Barbell)
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart and the barbell over your midfoot. Grip it overhand with a wide grip, hands far enough apart that the bar sits in your hip crease when you stand.
- Push your hips back and bend your knees, keeping your chest up, your back flat and the bar against your shins.
- Drive through your feet to stand up, extending your hips and knees together and keeping the bar close to your legs.
- Lower the bar to the floor with control along the same path. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Getting it right
- The wide grip starts you deeper than a normal deadlift, so your hips sit lower: keep your back flat from the first pull.
- Keep the bar close to your body throughout the lift.
- Use less weight than your normal deadlift; the bar travels further.
- Straps help if your grip gives out before your legs and back do.
